Carling Cup kicks off

Despite the Football League only kicking off three days ago, teams are in action again this week as the Carling Cup gets underway, with a trip to Wembley at the end of February being the incentive for everyone involved. A total of seventy teams enter the competition at the first round stage, with Hull and Burnley being given a bye due to their finishing positions last season. They will go into the hat for the second round draw along with the 13 Premier League teams that are not involved in European competition.

Stand up, if you love League 2

So it’s welcome back Gillingham and Wycombe, and hello Oxford and Stevenage. Not Stevenage Borough though as I have alluded to previously on this site. Southend and Stockport also return and are no strangers to League 2. The Spireites have a new ground, maybe they can lead from the front this term instead of their fashionable late runs for the playoffs. It’s out with the fizzy drinks, and in with the hot air as npower plant their name over anything and everything Football League. In through the out door

Despite finishing four points off the drop zone last season, if I was a Barnet fan I would be confident of success this term. Mr Kleanthous has done his fellow fans proud bringing Mark Stimson to the club. Stimson equals success, and Gillingham’s decision to end his contract in May was understandable, but possibly short sighted. The former Grays Athletic boss is held in high regard in non-league circles, winning the FA Trophy three seasons in a row with two different clubs. [Read more...]

We’re here, now what do we do?

So Stevenage Borough have checked 34 years of history at the door as they enter the Football League. That is a raw deal for their fans, and a very poor show. Teams have come and gone in League 2 with suffixes such as Alexandra, Dons, Albion, Vale, Stanley and then there are Dagenham and Redbridge. But Borough are no more, after they dropped this part of the clubs name for marketing reasons. I am sure Steve Jobs was on the phone as soon as he heard. [Read more...]
