After the disappointment of England’s showing at the World Cup, the real action is finally here and first up for Colchester is the long journey to the real St James‘ Park, the home of Exeter City. Following Colchester United on the opening day of the season in the last few years has not been the best experience. Last season’s 7-1 humiliation of Norwich City at Carrow Road on the opening day is one of few victories for the Us on the opening day of the season. Carling Cup kicks off

Carling Cup kicks off

Despite the Football League only kicking off three days ago, teams are in action again this week as the Carling Cup gets underway, with a trip to Wembley at the end of February being the incentive for everyone involved. A total of seventy teams enter the competition at the first round stage, with Hull and Burnley being given a bye due to their finishing positions last season. They will go into the hat for the second round draw along with the 13 Premier League teams that are not involved in European competition.
