Despite the Football League only kicking off three days ago, teams are in action again this week as the Carling Cup gets underway, with a trip to Wembley at the end of February being the incentive for everyone involved. A total of seventy teams enter the competition at the first round stage, with Hull and Burnley being given a bye due to their finishing positions last season. They will go into the hat for the second round draw along with the 13 Premier League teams that are not involved in European competition.

The Championship finally gets underway this evening as new-boys Norwich take on Watford at Carrow Road, in a televised 7.45pm kick-off. The promotion and relegation places are always fiercely contested, as well as the battle to be the leagues top scorer, which was shared last season by Bristol City’s Nicky Maynard and Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham. One of the most high profile and interesting signings in the division has been that of David James from Portsmouth to Bristol City. Having turned down a move to Celtic and opting for Ashton Gate, the capture of the England goalkeeper is a superb piece of business and there is no question that the influence he will have on the team, both on and off the pitch, can only benefit The Robins.
